REPORT ON THE YEAR 2004 / LEADERS REPORT

    The non-profit organizations state research enterprise "State Stende Plant Breeding station" being under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture by order of the Cabinet of Ministers on 26.10.2004 No. 820 was suggested to be reorganized into the state limited liability company "Stende Cereal Breeding institute". It was performed based on commercial law and requirements about Commercial law coming into force. The activities of the station are prescribed by the law on Research activities amendments in which are currently done, reorganization of the station is currently delayed by 1 July 2005. Requirements of this law and connected standards will establish further principles of activities of the reorganized research institution.
    The main tasks of the State Stende Plant Breeding station are as follows: development of new cereal barley, oat, winter and spring wheat varieties; perform maintenance breeding of cereal and red clover varieties developed in Stende, research on cereal and perennial grasses breeding technologies, propagation of breeder seed and pre-basic seed material. The State Stende Plant Breeding station in competition order has been included in complex research cooperation project No. 02.0013 of the Latvian Council of Science "Development and maintenance breeding of competitive field crop varieties using traditional and biotechnology methods" (project leaders: Dr.agr. S.Zute, Dr.biol. I.Belicka), as well as in the performance of two research projects: No.010763.3 "Investigation of cereal growing regularities for the production of bread, alcohol, dietetic and functional products under agro-climatic conditions of Kurzeme" (project leader: M.S.agr. M.Krotovs), and No.01.0762.3 "Influence of meteorological conditions, growing technologies and decreased doses of herbicides on weed infestation in spring barley" (project leader: M.S.agr. S.Malecka).
