SEED PRODUCTION OF FIELD CROPS

Information:

Already in 1923 in Stende there was organized Seed sorting point where seed was cleaned using Schule system seed cleaning equipment. Seed control department was working at the station with the aim of estimating the purity of seed samples on the field and in the laboratories.
From 1928 seed treatment was started, special tubs were used for thermal seed treatment. About 400 ha of arable land were devoted to propagation of different crops and varieties.
Both the status of the station and varieties, tasks set for seed breeding, and volume of seed production have changed during many years of the station s existence. But the main idea of providing farmers with good quality seed material has remained up to now.

In 1999, the work of Seed production department was resumed. Its main tasks are as follows:
Prepare breeder seed and pre-basic seed for cereal and clover varieties developed at the station as well as basic seed for other field crop seeds including that of potatoes, rye and field pea varieties required in Kurzeme region.
Organizing work with seed producers:
              varietal copyrights supervision,
              cooperation contracts for seed propagation,
seminars organized for seed producers, and others.

In 2005, 16 field crop varieties developed at Stende were registered in Latvian Plant Variety list, including:
winter wheat "Krista", "Sakta", "Banga S"
barley "Abava", "Rasa", "Sencis", "Ansis", "Druvis"
oats "Stmara", "Liva", "Laima", "Arta", "Stendes Darta"
red clover "Stendes agrais", "Dizstende", "Stendes velais II"

This year farmers are offered 16 cereal, 4 potato and 2 clover varieties, there have been prepared 120 tons of cereal seed, around 150 t of seed potato and around 1 t of clover high grade seed.
