RESEARCH PROJECTS / FIELD CROP MANAGEMENT
|
Information:
The first investigations in crop management already had been started in 1922 when
fertilizer trials were established in red clover field. Initially the breeding of cereal crops,
potatoes, and pulses were studied. Frequently one researcher performed plant breeding technique
assessment and selection. Results of agro technical research were used as the basis for
recommendations and in lectures offered to farmers.
Particularly wide and many-factorial agro technical trials were established after the World War II.
Crop management department as a separate working group was formed in 1940. Fertilizer use and soil tillage
technologies were widely investigated. Many new plants not characteristic to Latvia, such as koksagizs,
maize and others, were brought in from the Soviet Union. Extended research on fodder crops resulted in
the establishment of fodder production department as well as in separate working group dealing with
establishment and growing techniques of meadows, pastures and grasslands.
The most famous researchers: S.Cudars and E.Metuzals (soil tillage and evaluation of fallows), Cand.Sc. (Agr.) R.Petersone (research on meadow and pasture establishment, Dr.agr. I.Celma (red clover and other legume management), A.Stamere, Dr.agr. E.Kreslins (field crop management).

The main tasks for crop management research:
investigation of cereal crop breeding regularities for grain growing under Kurzeme agro-climatic conditions for the production of definite food products;
elaboration of breeding technology for varieties of cereals and promising lines developed in the station to obtain high and quality crop yields;
find out optimal pesticides and fertilizer rates and evaluate use efficiency in field crop sowings.
Realized projects funded by the Latvian Council of Science in 2001 - 2004:
Project Nr. 0.10763.3 Investigation of cereal growing regularities for the production of bread, feed, alcohol, dietetic and functional products under agro-climatic conditions of Kurzeme. Project leader: M.S.agr. Miervaldis Krotovs
Project Nr.01.0762.3 Influence of meteorological conditions, growing technologies and decreased doses of herbicides on weed infestation in spring barley. Project leader: M.S.agr. Solveiga Malecka
The Latvian Council of Science from 2005 - 2008 is supporting research project
No. 05.1605.5 Optimizing of cereal output production suitable for processing technologies. Project leader: Dr.chem. Gunars Bremanis.
Responsible for project implementation:
M.S.agr. Solveiga Malecka, head of crop management group, Dr.chem. Gunars Bremanis, researcher
Margita Grinberga, agronomist
