RESEARCH PROJECTS / CEREAL BREEDING
|
Information:
Oat, rye, wheat, barley and pea breeding in Stende was started already in the first years of the station activities under the leadership of agronomists Jânis Lielmanis, Emîls Bçrziňđ and Jurijs Garbars. The first task of plant breeders was to collect and estimate populations of cereal crops cultivated in local farms.
In 1929 and 1930 there were registered first varieties obtained by selective method:
Rye “Stende”, winter wheat “Viestura 1” and “Zemgale”, oat “Stendes mazâs agrâs” and barley “Dzintara”.
In the course of time in Stende plant breeding work has been done for more than 20 field crop species and 60 varieties of 12 field crop species have been registered.

The main directions of plant breeders activities nowadays:
Assessment of variety models and selection criteria suitable for Latvian agro ecological conditions and definite kind of use;
Development of new varieties of cereal crops ? wheat, barley and oats corresponding to variety models;
Testing and introduction of new plant breeding methods including biotechnological methods into breeding of cereal crops;
Collaboration with European researchers and those from other countries, exchange of breeding material and conducting research;
Preparing new promising lines of cereal crops for registration (for DUS and VCU tests)
Maintenance of varieties developed in Stende and providing parent material for maintenance breeding needs;
Assessment, maintenance and inclusion of Latvian cereal crop genetic resources into breeding programs.
The Latvian Council of Science from 2001 to 2005 has supported research cooperation project No. 02.0013.3.1
Development and maintenance breeding of competitive field crop varieties using traditional and biotechnology methods.
Project leaders: Professor, Dr.habil.boil. Izaks Rasals, Dr. agr. Martins Belickis, Dr.agr. Uldis Miglavs
Responsible for project implementation in Stende: Dr.agr. Sanita Zute and profesor, Dr.biol. Ina Belicka
Sub-projects:
Development and maintenance breeding of winter wheat varieties
Development and maintenance breeding of spring barley varieties
Development and maintenance breeding of barley varieties
Development and maintenance breeding of oat varieties
Development and assessment of hulled and hulless barley breeding material
In 2005, in State Plant Protection service official state testing (DUS and VCU tests) are performed
for five new cereal crop varieties developed in Stende:
winter wheat No.L-1-93-130, L-95-80
barley "Kristaps"
hulless oats "S-156"
spring wheat No.Std 91-13-31
