ABOUT US / A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF SITE

     The State Stende Plant Breeding station is situated in the North Kurzeme upland - 78 metres above sea level - in Talsi district, Libagu parish, Dizstende. The territory of the plant breeding station is located near the highway Riga - Ventspils.

     The distance to strategically important cities and towns is as follows:
Rīga – 112 km, Ventspils – 75 km, Talsi – 6 km, Stende – 6 km.

     The station is farming about 160 ha of agricultural land around Dizstende village.

Soils deeply leached sod-podzolic light or medium loams and loamy sands with slightly acid reaction, high in potassium, medium high in phosphorus, organic matter content 1.7 - 3.4 %.

Maritime climate (80 km from the Baltic sea, 55 km from the Riga gulf) many cloudy days, moderately warm summer, cool and humid autumn, frequent thaws in winter; the climate is significantly different from that in the central and eastern part of Latvia.
