Information:

Janis Hilarijs Lielmanis (1895 1970). Obtained his Doctor degree in agronomy (Dr.agr.) in 1968. Founder of applied plant breeding in Latvia.

In the State Stende Plant Breeding station: manager and organizer of research activities (1922 1940), head (1944 1946), deputy-director in research, head of plant breeding department (1946 1956).

Rewards: Order of "Three Stars" 4th category (1933); Honoured agronomist of the Latvian SSR (1957); State prize of the Latvian SSR (1959); Honoured scientist of the Latvian SSR (1965); Order of the Red Banner (1966).

Memorial stone devoted to agronomist Janis Lielmanis was unveiled near Stende estate - in the historical house of the State Stende Plant Breeding station in 1995.


     When celebrating centenary of the founder of the station and agronomist Janis Lielmanis (1995), the Latvian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Skriveri Research centre (presently Research Institute of Agriculture, Latvia University of Agriculture) and the State Stende Plant Breeding station have founded agronomist Janis Lielmanis prize awarding persons for contribution and achievements in field crop breeding and seed production.

In 1998 Zinta Gaile, Dr.agr., vice-director of research, Study and Research farm "Vecauce" of the Latvia University of Agriculture.
In 2001 Maija Vitjazkova, Dr.agr., pea breeder, Priekuli Plant Breeding station.
Peteris Berzins, Dr.agr., researcher, Skriveri Research centre of the Latvia University of Agriculture.
In 2004 Uldis Miglavs, Dr.agr., potato virologist, director of long standing of Priekuli Plant Breeding station.
Mara Gruntina, oat breeder, the State Stende Plant Breeding station.
