Information:

We can speak about the first printed books stock in Stende district already at the end of the 18th century. It is known that overseer Juris from the Stende estate subscribed to a journal "Latviska Gada-Gramata" issued in Latvian, The first Librarian society in Stende parish in 1872 was organized by a teacher Teodors Fridenbergs (? 1910). Formation of the fundamental library of the State Stende Plant Breeding station was started in 1923 when the first head of the station Janis Lielmanis and his colleagues tried to obtain periodicals and books in different languages in agricultural sciences and applied agriculture, which would be useful for improvement of plant breeders work. Three bookcases full with books after librarian register system were for the first time systematized and registered in 1938. This year should be considered the year of the foundation of the fundamental library of the Stende Plant Breeding station. By 1945 the library had accumulated 1153 stock units, by 1977 36559 stock units. In 1985 fiction was separated from the scientific literature organizing separate Dizstende library of Libagu parish.


   In the fundamental library (founded in 1938) of the Stende Plant Breeding station there are registered about 5240 basic stock units, there are kept rich material regarding the history of Stende Plant Breeding station and furnished memorial room devoted to Janis Lielmanis, the founder of the station. In the library one can get information about research activities and results from the very beginning of the station till nowadays, read research reports and bibliography.

   The main task of the library is to perform historical investigation of the station and district synthesizing information accumulated in the library, studying archives materials and summarizing photo materials and life stories of private persons. The library stock of books has been replenished only with materials of international conferences and seminars in which researchers from the station has participated as well as with issues of agricultural research periodically published in Latvia. The library is taking part in different projects, prepares publications and issues on the history of the district, workers of the station and themes of the research.
